چکیده

ABSTRACT Accurate measurements of the cosmic shear signal require a separation true weak gravitational lensing from intrinsic shape correlations galaxies. These ‘intrinsic alignments’ galaxies originate galaxy formation processes and are expected to be correlated with field through tidal affecting galaxies, such as shearing for elliptical torquing spiral In this study, we use morphologically selected samples illustrisTNG simulation at z = 0 1 test commonly employed linear (tidal shearing) quadratic torquing) models alignments. Intrinsic Galaxy Alignments and Weak Gravitational Lensing

Gravitational lensing causes background galaxy images to become aligned, and the statistical characteristics of the image alignments can then be used to constrain the power spectrum of mass fluctuations. Analyses of gravitational lensing assume that intrinsic galaxy alignments are negligible, but if this assumption does not hold, then the interpretation of image alignments will be in error. As ...

Weak gravitational lensing: reducing the contamination by intrinsic alignments

Intrinsic alignments of galaxies can mimic to an extent the effects of shear caused by weak gravitational lensing. Previous studies have shown that for shallow surveys with median redshifts zm ∼ 0.1, the intrinsic alignment dominates the lensing signal. For deep surveys with zm ∼ 1, intrinsic alignments are believed to be a significant contaminant of the lensing signal, preventing high-precisio...

Spin Induced Galaxy Alignments and Their Implications for Weak Lensing Measurements

Large scale correlations in the orientations of galaxies can result from alignments in their angular momentum vectors. These alignments arise from the tidal torques exerted on neighboring proto-galaxies by the smoothly varying shear field. We compute the predicted amplitude of such ellipticity correlations using the Zel’dovich approximation for a realistic distribution of galaxy shapes. Weak gr...

Intrinsic galaxy shapes and alignments II: Modelling the intrinsic alignment contamination of weak lensing surveys

Intrinsic galaxy alignments constitute the major astrophysical systematic of forthcoming weak gravitational lensing surveys but also yield unique insights into galaxy formation and evolution. We build analytic models for the distribution of galaxy shapes based on halo properties extracted from the Millennium Simulation, differentiating between earlyand late-type galaxies as well as central gala...
